Mt. Everest In Napal

Mt. Everest is the highest peak in the world. Its height is 8,848 meters (29,028 feet) above sea level. Everest is located in Khumbu Pasanglhamu rural municipality of Solukhumbu district of Nepal. Its name in Tibetan language is Chomolungma. Especially Thulung Rai locals call Everest as Chomolung. 

Mt.Everest was named Mount Everest after British surveyor Colonel Sir George Everest in 1865. Later, in 1956 (2012 B.S.), the historian Shiromani Baburam Acharya named it Everest and he also wrote the Nepali name of Everest, Jhyamolongmo. It is sometimes called Devdhunga. On May 29, 1953, at 11:15 a.m., Tenzing Norge Sherpa of Nepal and Sir Edmund Hillary of New Zealand set foot on the summit of Mount Everest. 

Background to Nomenclature and Ascension

 In 1809, WS Webb, who went in search of the Upper Ganges, i.e., Kumaon region, discovered Dhaulagiri Himal in Nepal at a height of more than 8,000 meters, that is, Dhaulagiri Himal (8,172 meters) was the first mountain in the Himalayas to be measured. After measuring the height of this mountain, it was called the highest mountain in the world. In the same year, the height of other mountains was measured and the records were collected and sent to the office of the Survey of India. About three years later, in 1852, when Everest was declared the highest peak in the world, at that time its height was considered to be 29,020 feet. Mount Everest was given the name 'Peak 15' after the Roman symbol. Around 1852, Radhanath Sikander, a Bengali citizen, one of the members of a team of the Survey Department of India, who was measuring the height of the mountains using the 'Kyoda Light' device, claimed that he had discovered the highest peak. Radhanath had a disciple named Hennessy as his assistant. The height of the peak found by Tejvir Budhathoki and Radhanath Sikdar, the survey staff of the department, was 8,840 meters. Radhanath was a brilliant mathematician.

He was only 19 years old when he joined the Survey of India. One reason why he is remembered even today in Bengal is that he used to publish a postal magazine called 'Mashik Patra', which was specially for women. Bengali language was used in this post-magazine and there were materials to raise the level of social consciousness of women.The method of measuring the height of the highest peak was developed by British engineer George Everest. After the search for the world's highest peak began, the surveyor-general of India, Sir Andrew Waugh, who was studying the plains of Bihar (India), changed the name from the fifteenth peak to the name 'Mount Everest' in 1865 (1921) in memory of his predecessor George Everest.Andrew Wagh's team also claimed that one of Nepal's snow peaks is the highest part of the world. George was 75 years old when he was named by the then Company Government of India. George Everest was the Surveyor General of India from 1825 to 1843.In the year 2013, the historian Baburam Acharya named the mountain 'Sagarmatha' in Nepali style. He gave the Nepali name of this mountain 'Sharada' through a magazine.
